Distinctive Fountain City: Small town boasts big attractions
Fountain City, Indiana, is home to fewer than 800 people, but what it lacks in population, it more than makes up for in history.
In fact, the town is awaiting word on its application to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The styles of residential, commercial, and public buildings include Federal, Italianate, Queen Anne, Classical Revival, and Bungalow. Walking through Fountain City is rather like flipping through an encyclopedia of American architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Distinctive Centerville: The Town That Celebrates Its Archways
The Historic National Road, which is the primary route west at the turn of the 19th century, is the Main Street of historical Centerville, Indiana.
Word is that property along the road was so valuable when the town was being settled in the early 1800’s, builders didn’t want to waste an inch of frontage on lanes or alleys. Instead, they put in arched passages to allow people and wagons access to the back of their buildings.
Archways, that is.
Distinctive Hagerstown: A Small Town Full of Tradition, Innovation, and Charm
Clint Metcalf, member of the board for the local historical museum, describes Hagerstown, Indiana, as a “nice, little, quiet town that has a lot of charm.”
It’s true. Hagerstown has charm in abundance, especially during the summer.
First up is the Nettle Creek Players, a real old-fashioned summer stock theater. This year, the company will present Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” Actor Ike Wellhausen says that “Into the Woods” is “truly one of the shows I can say is for all ages.”
